Mazamitla is a remote mountain town beautiful city located in southern Jalisco amidst the mountains framed by Lake Chapala. The center of the town is characterized by cobbled streets and houses with tiled roofs, white walls and wooden doors.
Mazamitla is a colonial town, but its name is of pre-Hispanic origin: in Nahuatl it means "place where arrows are made for deer hunting." Before the conquest, it was inhabited by Purépechas from Michoacán and later lent to Hernán Cortés. At the beginning of Mexico's independence, Miguel Hidalgo is said to have traveled through the region and celebrated a mass in Palos Gordos, a ranchería in this municipality that still preserves an oak trunk that served as an altar.
This town is also the entrance to the Sierra del Tigre: in the surrounding forests you will find wooden cabins, natural attractions such as streams, waterfalls and green meadows among mountains that make it a perfect place for ecotourism.
